I feel that relationships formed online where two people never meet is kind of sad. The whole part of people being on this Earth is that we are meant to go through life together and to build relationships with each other. To be able to be there physically for another person is something that allows one to be considered a soul friend that can only be presented in physical form where you can truly be there and show sympathy, compassion and raw emotion. If you meet someone online and never meet them, it's almost like saying I know you're there but don't care about you enough to meet you.
Meeting someone in person allows for two people to be real with each other in person, instead of hiding behind a monitor. It allows a collaboration of ideas to be shared in person, while incorporating body language and excitement which allows someone to see and feel the energy of a friend which creates a bond.
I totally prefer meeting people in person because I am a people person. If I was not such an extrovert, I probably would not mind meeting people behind the pixels of a display.
